Welcome to Lamar's Legacy

Lamar H. Nielson (1917-1986) was born in a log cabin home in Mt. Carmel, Kane County, Utah. Mt. Carmel is located on the plateau above the great canyon known as Zion National Park. About nine years later, the family moved to Hurricane, Washington County, Utah, on the other side of today's Zion National Park.

Lamar was the second child born in his family of 2 girls and 4 boys. Times were very hard in those days, and Lamar tended sheep for relatives as a boy. His father also worked away from home quite a bit.

Lamar joined the army in 1940. He was sent to Corregidor, and In 1942, Lamar was taken prisoner by the Japanese on Corregidor, transported to Japan, and forced to work in the Japanese steel mills until the end of the war 3-1/2 years later.

Upon his return to the U.S., Lamar met and fell in love with Barbara Reid (1925-1991) who lived in Boulder City, Nevada, close to where Lamar's family lived at this time. Barbara and Lamar married and gave birth to a son, Michael in California. Lamar reenlisted, this time in the newly formed US Air Force and returned to the Philippines. His family joined him and it was there that they added a daughter, Paula, to their family. Later, Lamar worked for the Federal Aviation Administration until retirement.

Lamar sacrificed much for his family and his country. He was a good, kind, loyal, honest, decent, devoted family man, loved by all those who knew him. Click on the links to the left to learn more about him.
