Marriage & Family Upon his return to the U.S. from being a prisoner of war during WWII for 3-1/2 years in Japan, Lamar met and fell in love with Barbara Reid (1925-1991). They married and had a son, Michael in California. Lamar returned to the Philippines with the Air Force, and it was there that they added a daughter, Paula, to their family.
Lamar with Michael & Paula at Christmas in the Philippines From the Philippines, we returned to Petaluma, California. I remember being close as a family and Dad working nights to make extra money. I remember Mom driving to pick him up and bring him home from his night job, with the children in the back seat. I later learned that Mom was nervous about this as there had been a serial rapist on the loose in the area of our home. We had a good life there, but Dad was transfered often with the Air Force. Mom always made moving an exciting new experience. She never said anything negative in front of us about packing up and relocating. And so Michael and I grew up with a positive attitude about many new experiences in life and learned to make friends quickly in each new area.
At Hill AFB in Salt Lake City we lived in a suburb called Rose Park. There Dad lived close enough to ride a bicycle to work. Often we all took walks together in the neighborhood after dinner as a family. I loved that. I also loved how we would go as a family to the Base to watch family-type movies together on the weekends. I don't remember ever having a babysitter. We did everything as a family.
